2023 Committee Highlights

Dan Randall (Treasurer)

MOTH: The Exhibition

For me, one of the more exciting parts of the OUTPOST programme is our Artist Development events, where we support an artist to produce a project of their choice. Moth’s event helped push them as a visual artist by producing an exhibition reflecting on their drag throughout the years. It was great to see local queer artists celebrated in this way.

I really enjoyed the event, hats off to the committee members that led on this activity. Being able to bring people into Anglia Square and the studio space to discuss the art scene and it's struggles and all was a very earthly experience. It was truly amazing what has come out of this event.

For me it’s the solo show opening parties - they have such a community feel, and it is always lovely to see so many people interacting with the art and exhibitions in a more casual setting.

It was a delight to see a variety of interactive and performance art in the gallery for an evening. The event featured films, readings, live music, and more from some of our incredibly talented members, who (within our regular programming) might not have otherwise got to show their work in the space. Plus, it was fantastic having so many people coming together for OUTPOST!

Getting the chance to celebrate some of the independent artistic talent in Norwich, showcased in such a respectful, supportive and appreciative way was a great chance to feel how strong the community ties are; which is such a refreshing thing to witness and be a part of, especially since COVID.

Emily Bray-Manning (Membership Coordinator)

The 2023 Member’s Show was a highlight for me this year! The annual group exhibition is such a fun way to bring different artists and their work together into the gallery - pulling on the different threads of creative practice to create a unique experience. This year’s Member’s Show selector, Hannah Wallis, ensured accessibility led a lot of the curatorial decisions - something OUTPOST now continues to do, for example working with exhibiting artists to create audio descriptions. A gorgeous experience to work with many fantastic creatives (local, national and international!) and learn more on how to enhance how we deliver our exhibitions.

Maddie Exton (Chair)

I've been really glad to move towards opportunities that are less individualistic and more generative - it was great to be able to use the gallery to host Miranda Mungai's workshop: Learning To Imagine a Future. I'm so happy we can host these activities for free and for all - it feels so important to use the space as somewhere people can access resources for free, no strings attached. Outside of libraries, there are few spaces like this in society and charities excel at plugging this gap where governments fail.

The 30 minute activities before steering committee general meetings have been so special. Sound baths with Lola, exquisite care, manifesto writing, readings, Christmas party decoration making. These moments are so much more than a preamble; they set the tone for the committee and have brought us together as a group. Without these the meetings would be so much more transactional and so much less communal.

Zoe Gouli (Secretary)

For me, the solo shows we hosted in 2023 were particularly special. It was wonderful seeing a large scale project through its various stages from start to finish. I particularly enjoyed working with Amelia Frances Wood and Hazel Soper; I learned a lot from them and enjoyed helping to actualise their ideas in the gallery space.
