#43 Andrew Warstat, After the Disaster

Andrew Warstat exhibited a collection of photo-objects which were produced by a repeated process of photographing, printing, defacement and re-photographing.

Warstat’s photo-objects were lined up along two of the gallery walls. On a separate wall a vinyl transcript of a conversation between anonymous participants echoed the OUTPOST artist interview. The dialogue followed the participants’ attempts to talk about writing; miscommunication occurs which generates revision and correction. The text “NOT YET” and “NO LONGER” appears consecutively on two metal girders overhead.

ONGOING WORK – ONGOING DISASTER

A week before the end of the exhibition Warstat tore the photo-objects from the wall leaving new images of defacement. The removed material was fed back in to the artist ’s ongoing process of image obliteration and re-capture.The exhibition was accompanied by a publication in which the artist's photographic constructs are printed alongside an essay by writer Mike Phillipson, who makes connections between Warstat, representation and survival.
