Hotel Palenque, Dmitri Galitzine
Event: Thursday 24 November, 6pm
Open to public - admission free
OUTPOST event is proud to host a one-night project by Hotel Palenque, exhibiting its third commissioned artwork by Herefordshire-based artist, Dmitri Galitzine.
Established in June 2011, Hotel Palenque is a contemporary art commission programme focused on producing and presenting new work by emerging artists across Europe.
For each commission, Hotel Palenque invites one artist to create an artwork according to a simple set of production rules. Firstly the work must be eligible to be produced or reproduced to an A0 paper format (0.8 x 1.2m), and secondly all digital files and associated materials must be destroyed prior to the work being shown.
By imposing a rigid set of production requirements, this project consciously removes the reproducible qualities of the digital to artificially create an original. All that remains is a single A0 paper trace, which is subsequently presented at a gallery event for one night only, and then archived online.
For this event at OUTPOST, Hotel Palenque will display new work by Dmitri Galitzine, produced in collaboration with the Norwich & Norfolk Medieval Association. The A0 print exhibited is the unique public documentation of a historical reenactment performed at the gallery space by the N.A.N.M.A members the previous day.
Specialising in the period of the Reign of King Edward 3rd (1312-1377AD), the reenactors have been invited by Galitzine to display a situation of their choice. The Norwich & Norfolk Medieval Association has been involved in portraying 12th Century military encampment since 1975, and with more than 30 active members throughout East Anglia, aims to share their passion for history of this specific period through carefully prepared reenactment tableaus.
Dmitri Galitzine (1986, London) lives and works in Herefordshire. Educated at Kingston University and Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design.
Recent exhibitions include Prune with Toby Christian at Fold Gallery, London (2011), Given the Standards of the Day at Formula Gallery, St Petersburg, Russia (2011). Forthcoming exhibitions include The Shape of Things to Come Part II, Saatchi Gallery, London (2012).
