Jade Montserrat, Contagion Workshop

Saturday 10 August, 1-4pm

Jade Montserrat is the recipient of the Stuart Hall Foundation Scholarship which supports her PhD (via MPhil) at IBAR, UCLan, (Race and Representation in Northern Britain in the context of the Black Atlantic: A Creative Practice Project) and the development of her work from her black diasporic perspective in the North of England. She was also awarded one of two Jerwood Student Drawing Prizes in 2017 for No Need for Clothing, a documentary photograph of a drawing installation at Cooper Gallery DJCAD by Jacquetta Clark. Jade’s recent work includes Revue a 24 hour live performance at SPILL Festival of Performance, a solo exhibition Instituting Care at The Bluecoat which is currently touring at Humber Street Gallery, and a commission to create the 2018 Winter Night Tube cover for Art on the London Underground.

Jade Montserrat, Contagion Workshop 2019

For W.O.OSE Mentoring, Jade Montserrat’s Contagion Workshop invited participants to edit and ‘redact’, annotate and erase charcoal wall drawings. Individuals joined Jade in workshopping the language we use in art and politics. Using Jade’s glossary of terms complied for her exhibition, Instituting Care and following on from Rootedzine’s Workshop for that exhibition, collectively discussing terms might prompt review and alteration. Through open discussion the group worked through the meanings of terms such as ‘decolonisation’, ‘othering’ and ‘privilege’ and suggested other terms which might be useful to us when discussing ideas of class, race, gender, disability and care.
