About the Studio of Young Artists’ Association (FKSE)
Unique in its institutional structure, the Studio of Young Artists Association (FKSE) is a civil organisation, an art space and a gallery, as well as a meeting and networking point in Budapest, Hungary.
FKSE is a membership organisation of almost 500 members, including artists, art historians, curators and critics; covering a significant percentage of the Hungarian art scene. Members are selected on a yearly application basis.
Approximately half of the members are emerging artists and theoreticians under 35 and FKSE mainly acts in their interests, providing a variety of opportunities including projects and open calls.
In its current form, FKSE has been operating since the early 1990s. It was one of the first arts organisations to try to create dialogue and exchange with potential partners from Europe. It is this tradition that FKSE carries forward in the form of residency programs.
FKSE runs a variety of projects simultaneously. At the Studio Gallery, located conveniently near the centre of Budapest, monthly exhibitions of members' work, workshops, artists’ talks and discussions are organised. FKSE has four studios, one of which is used by the resident artist (FKSE currently runs residency programs with institutions from the UK, France, Finland and the Czech Republic) other facilities include a communal kitchen and a common room. FKSE has a large archive of its own history, reaching back to the 1950s, and functions as an information source for members and residents. FKSE also runs the Labor Gallery in co-operation with the Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
FKSE daily tasks are run by two colleagues with major decisions being made by an advisory board of eleven members, who work on a voluntary basis and include young artists and theoreticians elected by the yearly assembly of FKSE.

Members‘ Exchange 2014
In 2014, OUTPOST Norwich UK and FKSE Budapest HU will deliver their first Members’ Exchange programme. This twinned residency offers an opening for two artists, one selected from each organisation’s respective membership, to develop their practice on an international platform, engage in current debate concerning contemporary art practice, carry out research and experimentation and contribute to the dynamic of an artistic community.
From 1st May to 12th June an artist selected from FKSE’s membership will be resident at OUTPOST studios. FKSE studios, in Budapest, will host one of OUTPOST’s UK based members as resident artist during the same six-week period.
Members’ Exchange has been conceived through an ongoing relationship between FKSE and OUTPOST, whose dialogue began in 2010 with EASTgoesEAST, part of the EASTinternational programme, and continued in 2013 when Klára Petra Szabó was received as resident artist at OUTPOST studios.
FKSE runs a gallery, studios and artist membership comparable to OUTPOST, supporting a similar number of artist members. We share the mutual aim of promoting our members at the highest level of international contemporary art practice. Members’ Exchange is therefore seen as an important step in continuing to build stronger relationships between international counterparts. FKSE gallery runs a changing exhibition programme that focuses on supporting artists in the production and exhibition of new works, and is managed by a rolling, voluntary board of eleven directors and two employees.
Members’ Exchange 2014 is made possible through the generous support of the National Cultural Fund of Hungary and Arts Council England.
Budapest Residency Overview
The selected UK based artist will receive a studio space inclusive of all costs for a period of six weeks.
They will be provided with free accommodation located within easy reach of public transport.
The allocated budget of £1300 will cover travel expenses, material costs and subsistence.
At the beginning of the residency period, the selected artist will be asked to give a brief introductory presentation.
At the conclusion of the residency the participant will be invited to present a solo public presentation in the form of an open studio.
The resident artist will receive assistance and support from FKSE staff and volunteers, however as technical equipment and facilities are limited, a pro-active and independent attitude will be beneficial to the successful applicant.
