On the way back from Norwich I stopped to rest in a lay-by and Joseph Beuys came to me in a dream and said Andy I think you have to include everyone.
Dear Members of Outpost,
I arrived tried and slightly broken in Norwich to attempt to ‘curate’ the 2017 members exhibition. I have to say when confronted with the piles of submissions I was overwhelmed and more than daunted. I know quite a lot of you from round and about, I like a lot of the work, many of you know that. But I can’t really make a judgement on what’s good, or even if that is what I’m meant to do. Or just make a show from the hundreds of works and try not to think about the quality judgment this implies. I’ve been wrestling a lot with what it’s like to make a judgement, how to say if something works, and how judgments end up propelling images, and the responsibility that comes with that. Not that I want to shirk that responsibility. I wouldn’t have said yes to this if hadn’t understood I was being asked to make a value judgment of some kind.
Anyway I think I’d like to include everyone. The way I think I can do this is to make a kind of cartoon gallery; include everyones work, but through the images, films and sounds you submitted. These will be projected into the cartoon world, and cartoon me will be there too, as a cartoon of a curator, making arrangements, displays, and walking through your installation shots. I maybe can’t make anything that I’m not somehow in. It’s my way of understanding things, getting into the images. Make of that what you will, I will understand if you judge that harshly.
I like it that everyone who’s a member of Outpost will all be in a show together for the first time, in unlikely configurations admittedly, maybe imperfectly, but I’ll try and put it together in a way that felt true to my experience of roaming through the submissions, sat on the computer in the Outpost office, overwhelmed, daunted, but also ultimately as an uplifting, idealistic experiment.
I hope this is ok with you all? If not just say and you can be included out. But otherwise, if you are okay with this, your work will be in the exhibition, via the images you submitted, in one form or another, if you are happy to trust me with a little licence, a few liberties.
Your, awkwardly, apologetically, but optimistically.
Andy
