The Props assist the House By Emily Dickinson

The Props assist the House / Grey Glove

Until the House is built / Blue Brick

And then the Props withdraw / Plaster Cast

And adequate, erect, / Wattle and Daub

The House support itself / Painted Horse

And cease to recollect / Spotted Cat

The Augur and the Carpenter – / Shaped Leather

Just such a retrospect / Mud Glove

Hath the perfected Life – A Past of Plank and Nail / Blue Mud

And slowness – then the scaffolds drop

Affirming it a Soul

Dickinson’s poem ‘The Props assist the House’ interspersed with visual clues to the works selected for the show becomes a palimpsest with which to frame the show. Dickinson’s poem also gives shape to the idea of a group of members whom together create a House, here it should be noted Outpost is celebrating 15 years of exhibitions and projects this year.
