This is an exciting opportunity for independent trustees to support the work of the Charitable Incorporated organisation Norwich OUTPOST (#FBF696) in a voluntary capacity.

About us

Norwich Outpost (#FBF696) is a charity that promotes the education of the public in the arts, through the provision and maintenance of an art gallery showing work of students and emerging artists, and provides the relief of poverty among emerging artists by the provision of studio spaces. We are deeply committed to these objectives and are looking for trustees who are impartial, fair and have a strong sense of empathy with Outpost’s mission.

OUTPOST is an artist-led, volunteer run gallery, based in Norwich, committed to the uncompromising presentation of contemporary art. Since its founding in 2004, OUTPOST has established itself as a leading centre for artist activity in the east of England, currently producing a core programme of 7 exhibitions per year. The gallery is run by a Steering Committee of up to eight volunteers, who each have a limit of two years’ service.

OUTPOST Studios is an artist-run studio complex, based in Norwich, committed to providing affordable spaces for contemporary art practitioners in the eastern region. Since its founding in 2010, OUTPOST studios has established itself as one of the largest studio providers for artistic activity in the East of England. OUTPOST Studios are based in Gildengate House, Anglia Square, where it is currently occupied by more than 90 artists.

The charity was founded in November 2004 as the unincorporated charity ‘Outpost’ and in 2016 converted to the CIO #FBF696.

Objectives:

  1. The promotion of education of the public in the arts through the provision and maintenance of an art gallery for exhibition to the public of contemporary art and of work done by students and emerging artists by promotion within the gallery and elsewhere.

  2. The relief of poverty among emerging artists by the provision of studio space in which they may create art and by assisting with networking and support.

Our vision:

Our future lies in the delivery of the following key ambitions, to:

● create within our Steering Committee model, a sustainable way of working that is open to all and which recognises and rewards the time and commitment of those who serve.
● extend membership of our Board of Trustees to ensure that we have the strategic skills to deliver on our ambitions and to mentor and support our Steering Committee membership.
● secure the long-term future of our gallery and studio facilities within our city.
● develop our strategic relationships within Norwich to build a greater understanding of our practice and our unique significance to the cultural ecology of Norwich and our wider region.

OUTPOST Steering Committee

The Norwich OUTPOST Steering Committee are a voluntary group of up to eight members who run the artistic activity at OUTPOST Gallery and OUTPOST Studios, as well as the day to day running of the charity. Committee members are engaged in every aspect of running the contemporary art programme including curation, events management, fundraising, marketing, gallery outreach, and administration. Opening and closing the gallery is part of the role and as such individuals must be based locally to Norwich.

This is a voluntary role with some paid opportunities and we encourage artists to apply, but there are no qualifications necessary. We highlight the importance of flexibility, motivation, and passion for contemporary art. Our success depends on maintaining an environment of support and collaboration.

Individuals will be asked to shadow for a period of 3-6 months; successful individuals will then be invited to join as a member of the Steering Committee. This is a voluntary role, but committee members will be entitled to a Research and Development Fund to extend their knowledge and to develop the future of OUTPOST programming. OUTPOST accepts applications for new committee members on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
